Fishing TIp by STeiny

Repo - fishing info to share w/group.

We are going right after the holiday weekend. This may make fishing a bit more challenging as the fish may get hit hard over the holiday.

I have attached a drawing (YEA-YEA I AM NOT AN ARTIST!!!) of 3 set ups used for river fishing for trout. There are others, but these 3 are what I use 90% of the time. THE SECOND PIC IS ONE SENT TO ME.... LOOKS LIKE A RELAXING WAY TO GO.

IF YOU BRING ONE ROD, I RECOMMEND A SECOND REEL... SPOOLED WITH LINE AND READY TO USE.

Special fishing rules on fox river. Think this reads that type 1 regs in place while we are there. So it's gonna be floatin worms.

Here are some links on the fishing in the area that we will be in.

Of particular note in this article is how one of the anglers was eaten a live by bugs in June. So be ready with bug suits. James and I have at least one each. Looks like we are going to need them.

R3P0 owns a canoe.

Thanks to my buddy Craig for finding a canoe for me on Craig's list. I checked several places and only found dented and leaking canoes for $150. I called on the one that Craig sent and was able to strike a deal for $400 for a 17' Grumman http://www.marathonboat.com/doubleend-17.asp.

Trip 2011

Preliminary talks have concluded that the locale for our next trip will be to the UP near the Fox river. We will float down this river thru Seney Wildlife refugee then on to the Manistique river.

1 day of work and Half day at rest.

Last things on the list.
Menu, shopping, day two mileages.

Looking at the second day of crossings that we have to do is looking like the following:

We can take either route according to the weather conditions.

2 days

3 days

The last of the preparations are left to do. Waterproof the new tent and seam seal. Sew and Glue Velcro into the seat so my seatback wont fly around.

NO resi needed at sand Bay Campground yea. Nick is going to have a bonfire with Fi at Craigs so that makes it much easier to get them to my house by 11 on Friday.

10 days or less.

Now the plan is coming together. Work has been done on the most technical part of the trip the first day and the crossings.

apostle islands paddle day one

hints to seakayaking rescue

First rerunning the numbers for gas at $3/gal we come up near $378 for
gas, roughly 1400+ miles round trip.
Second next important date for the trip is April 30th, as this is the
first day that we can get a park permit pre-registered. I will be handling
this.
Third I will be comparing costs benefits of taking the ferry across the
lake vs driving through the UP. I hope to be able to do this in the next
day or so.

Side notes. Craig and I will try to finalize the float plan. We want to
base camp somewhere for at least tow nights.

So Sand bay Monday--> Oak island east--> ironwood island 2 nights, then
out to york one night, then out.

This makes for two rather lengthy paddles in and out.

Note on clothing. At a bare minimum you should have a wet suit, either
bottom, or full, or short suit. Preferrably a dry suit if available. Don't
risk taking any chances
with Lake Superior. Last time we were at Apostle Islands I tested with my
own sefl, wet suit bottoms. I purposely flipped my kayak in about 10 feet
of water and attempted to swim, walk on bottom. I happened to have planted
my temperature watch in the water and it was 37* that day. In less than
the 5 minutes it took to walk to shore I could not feel my legs nor, and I
could barely move them to walk into shore. Just an anecdote on how
dangerous these waters can be.

Trailer update. Last night I had a good welding session on have the
fenders all welded back on Craigs trailer. I will be adding supports to
the fenders, and a license plate holder tonight as well as some fresh
paint.
